Weekend Forecast

So, this weekend’s forecast is as follows:

Friday: 16 mile run
Saturday: Matteson Dash into the New Year 5k
Sunday: Recuperate from lots of running (and lots of NYE celebrating)
Monday: Doctors appointment to make sure my body isn't slowly crumbling

I decided to mix my training up a little bit, because I wanted to get the 5k race in there. I think it is good for me to get a little competition in so I can get more familiar with the "race setting". I have only done 2 other races before, so pacing with other people and running smart are things I need to improve upon.

For the 16 mile run, I am hoping that the weather cooperates with me. Of course, as I am writing this, on Thursday, the weather is beautiful out and conditions for a great run. I am sitting here, doing nothing outside. I am going to map out my course before hand again so I know I am "going the distance" of 16 miles. Tonight I am going to think of a way to make sure I have aqua with me when I run, but I don't want to hold it. I might look into buying some sort of pack for my waist or something.

I am already looking forward to Sunday. We are getting a hotel in Chicago, and so my bed will be comfortable and I can sleep in (hopefully)!!!

I have a check up for Monday with the doctors. I am just making sure that I am maintaining a healthy training/ diet regimen for my body. I am going to ask the doc to look at my ankle, knees and heart. Lets hope all goes well.

That’s about it. As the days go by, ultimately so do the weeks and before I know it, I'll be running my marathon!

Until the next run,
cody!

Running Around Town

Well, no one said that this training was going to be easy, and now that I am getting into the longer stages of running in my preparation, I am seeing this to be a reality more that not. I know that I have been having a good training experience so far, but I think a lot of it has to do with my determination and drive to succeed at this!

So, on Saturday, I was scheduled to run 15 miles. I am going to admit that I was only able to complete 14.35 miles. While I did not complete the scheduled length, I am really proud of myself. There were several factors that I believe contributed to me not finishing: new route, elevation, and lack of hydration.

For my long runs, I have been doing laps around the 3.6-mile trail near where I live. I didn’t really feel like running in giant circles, so I decided to try running around Park Forest and “discover new territory” although the route I used, I used because I knew where I was going. I drove around before hand so I could map out the course and make sure my mileage was accurate to what I was actually running. This run not only included residential scenery, but also some “highway” (Governors Highway), lots of inclines, SUN! and both gravel and sidewalk areas.

I have come to realize that for me, the first 3-6 miles are the toughest. They are the hardest to stay motivated and not want to just stop and walk. I’m thinking that maybe I need to intake some sort of energy right before I start my runs so that it is smooth sailing from the start. After that 6th mile, I am usually feeling good and have little problems.

One of the main things I was trying to concentrate on while running was not to worry about timing. I know that I usually like to stay within an 8 min/mile pace, but because it was so long and I knew that it was a new route that I just needed to focus on keeping a comfortable pace and completing the run.

Anywho, for the most part the run went well. Toward the 13 mile mark, I was in need, major need, for some Gatorade or water or something to hydrate my body. I ran and munched on my energy bars while I was running, but those contributed to my dry mouth. I really think that if I had some liquids (and I have taken enough nutrition classes in college to know the importance of liquids and hydration while long exercises) that I would have been able to finish the race.

My knees also at the end of the run were really feeling the run. I think I have some serious knee issues, but am afraid to got to the doctor for the thought of them telling me that I really should not be running like I am on my knees just really doesn’t not sit well with me. I am going to schedule a doctor’s appointment this week though to make sure that I am healthy enough to complete this marathon.

So there you have it. I did my 14 miles and am trying to maintain my optimism for my future runs. Here are the stats from this weekends run:

Miles:14.35
Time:2:19:29
Pace: 9:43 min/mile
Calories Burnt: 2106

As always, thanks for reading!

Until the next run,
Cody!

Week 10!

This marks the 10th week of my training. The scariest thing about that is that there are only 18 weeks to the training program, so AHHH only 8 more weeks left and then I have to run my marathon. While it still seems daunting and intimidating, I am totally ready to just do it! I say this all now and come the day of the race, I will be freaking out!

This week brought some news to me. I went to the store and picked up some new gloves for the cold weather. I had been using an older pair of North Face gloves, but they just were cutting it for me. The really awesome thing about them though was that I could still operate my phone! I got two new Nike pairs.  One of which are for not so cold weather and the other are more heavy duty. I used them both this week and so far so good. They even have a pocket for a key! Its pretty awesome!

Also new this week are my SHOES!!! I finally got my act together and went to a store, The Human Race Sport in Orland Park, and got my feet analyzed and fitted for a specific pair of shoes. Not quite sure of the exact kind, but they are Asics. So, I must tell you this story, as it will serve as some amusement from my rather dry blog that you read.

I am at this store and they are doing all these tests to my feet, which I have learned that I am pronated (Look it up). Any who, the man helping me had me try on a pair of shoes. He took me outside of the store, which was in a strip mall, and told me to run down to the mailbox and back. I did as he told and we went back inside. They he had me try one another pair and told me to the same, while he this time waited inside. So I run down to the mail and turn around. I begin to run back to the store and am looking down at my shoes to “examine my feet as I run” when all of the sudden **SMACK** I run right into a door as someone is walking out. It literally was like a scene from a movie. The man obviously wasn’t cautiously walking out of the door to be aware of some idiot running along the strip mall, so he flung the door open and walked out. I ran straight into the edge of the door, clobbered the man walking out and made a complete fool of myself. The man felt really bad too and wanted to make sure I was ok, but we couldn’t help but laugh (I was secretly crying inside because it freaking hurt) but we shook it off and continued on our way. My word of caution, when trying on shoes and running along a strip mall, be aware of opening door!
Needless to say, those were the shoes that I ended up buying! :D

This week has been ok so far. I have had slower than usual times, but I think a lot of it is I am trying new routes and the weather has been very overcast, chilly and wet. I am remaining positive, because I know that I will not always have 7-8 minute paces. This week I have run 9 miles. Tomorrow is 4 and then on Saturday, the big 15! Lets hope for a little sun at least!

Until the next run,
cody!

blown away

Man, today was a windy one. I knew it was windy when I started my run. The thing with running is that half of it will be good and the other half is bad. You can either run with the wind or against it.

I started off my run and I was running with the wind. Normally I would like this because it is isn’t pushing against me and not all in my face, but today it was really windy and was actually making me go faster. I had to concentrate on my pace and not let the wind speed up my pace blowing behind me. I did an OK job with that.

Inevitably, I have to turn around and run back on the path, which means that this time I had run against the wind. It was BRUTAL!!! At some points, I felt like I was pumping my legs so hard but getting nowhere. Being that I am running in Illinois means that it is ALLLL flat lands so there is nothing to break up the wind, and go figure most of this run was on an open road so there were no trees or buildings.

I did make it though the run. I knew my timing was going to be off from what I normally run due to the wind. I was totally ok with this! I think I need to get out of the mindset of running a certain time. I just need to run for the sake of running. I will finish eventually. Besides the horrible wind, I felt pretty good.

Until the next run,
cody!

Half Marathon, SAY WHAT!?!?

Alright, I did it! I officially ran the distance of a half marathon. Something I literally never thought I would do! My goal was to write this right after my run, so that things would be fresh in my mind, but when I tried, the last thing I wanted to do was sit in front of the computer and type, I was so tired. So here's what went down!

On Saturday night, I took some melatonin pills to help me have a good night sleep. My intention was to get up at 6:45, eat some food, and rest a little until my run at 8. But go figure, I work up at 7:45. So, I did the same things, just an hour behind my intended time. I made sure to go to the store and pick up my energy bars to take on my run. I finally made it to the forest preserve around 9 and began my run.

The weather was great. The sun was shining and I couldn't be happier with that. It usually takes my .50 miles to warm up and get comfortable. There was a light dusting of snow on some areas of the trail, but nothing worth continuing about. I was looking forward to listening to my music as I had updated my playlist! There were a few people walking and running on the trail as well, which I love.

While running, I remembered something that someone told me earlier that week. And take this as some advice for you "encouragers". I was speaking to someone about where I like to run, at this particular forest preserve. She told me that her and her husband like to walk there and it is nice, but I need to watch out for coyotes or wolves (I can't remember). She continued to tell me that these animals not only are prevalent in that area, but since it is a more rural area, they are breeding with dogs, AND that they travel in packs rather than alone, because they have the dog pack instinct in them. So, here I am, minding my own business running and jamming out to music when all of the sudden this thought pops into my head. Now, I am sure she was just sharing that story with me to warn me, but the last thing I want to be is afraid when I am running that a pack of half wolf/coyote half dog will be lurking about watching my every move, planning their attack.

Anyways, I am going to not worry about that too much. FYI, skip this next paragraph if you are of the weak stomach. Of all the running I have done, one thing that I have learned in preparation for my long runs is to definitely use the restroom before hand. Yes, I am talking about going #1 and #2. Now the only reason why I am going to talk about this is because I am blogging about my total experience, and this is what happened to me on my run. So, about mile four I realized something. I forgot to go to the bathroom (#2) before my run. It was something I told myself before I went to bed the night before. Long story short, I wasn't about to stop my run and go in the forest, so I sucked it up and moved forward. I did have gas throughout my run, and later learned that I had sharted just a little bit in my pants. haha/ew I know! (You are the one who chose to follow my blog) So yes, go both #1 and#2 before your longs runs. It is more important that you will ever realize.

Moving on from that story... For the most part, my run went really well. As always, at point of the run various parts of my body got tight and sore. I really need to continue my leg strength conditioning on my short run days. The wind does make it more difficult, but you just have to muster through that. I wore my leggings, turtleneck and pullover, gloves and earmuffs throughout the run. I stayed warm, but not hot which was very comfortable.

Once the run was over, I walked for a while because my body was sore and tried but I didn't want to just stop and leave. When I got back to my car, I did my stretches. I brought some G2 Gatorade and drank some of that and finish my energy bars to restore some of the nutrients that were lost.

So, here are the details of my run:

Distance: 13.22
Time: 1:45:02
Pace: 7:56 mins/mile
Calories Burnt: 1947

I was really pleased with my result. The more important thing was that I wasn't exhausted and ready to die by the end. This is promising for the remainder of my training.

More updates to come. Happy Running to you all!

Until the next run,
cody!

Who's ready for Sunday? This Guy!

So, I have done my short runs for the week, and for the most part it went well. On Thursday, I ran 3 miles as fast as I thought I could for the whole run. I finished just under 23 minutes. I guess I'll take it.

So, I have today and tomorrow off. Normally my long runs would come on Saturday, but my training program was nice to me this week :D I will not be doing anything physical, or physically demanding for these days. I do have my show (shameless plug for) "She Loves Me" performances at The Drama Group in Chicago Heights, call 708. 755.3444 for more details. So yes, moving on...

I have a HALF MARATHON to run on Sunday. Well, not an actual race, but the distance will be 13.2 miles. Looking ahead, the weather will be the best it is supposed to be all weekend, so if all hold up according to the not so accurate Chicago forecasts, I should have good weather conditions for my run. I will most likely do what I did for my 12 mile run last weekend. Eat the same foods, dress the same, and bring an energy bar and use the heating pad for my back. I am not going to go out after my show on Saturday night, as I will have to do my run at 8:00am. I do not want to create any excuses for myself! I am looking forward to the challenge; I just hope that I can live up to it.

I will let you know on Sunday how it goes, if I'm alive :D So, I guess the next matter of business is... How is your running going? Have you become inspired? Or, is there any aspect of my training that I am not talking about that you may be curious in? Comment here or shoot me an email at caczmyr@yahoo.com. Comments are always welcomed and appreciated, that way I know I'm not the only one reading my blog haha.

Until the next run,
cody!

Tuesday

Today was the start of a new running week. It started off with a 3 mile run. Let me tell you, it was cold and windy today, which makes for a not-so-pleasurable run. I was able to run the 3 miles in 24 minutes, which I think is the fastest I've run so far, but I think it had a lot to do with the fact that I just wanted to get the run over with! I should use that mentality more often.

Tomorrow is 6 miles, then 3 or 4 on Thursday and I have Friday and Saturday off because I am supposed to run my first Half Marathon on SUNDAY. It isn't an actual race, but the distance will be 13.2 miles. I have already looked ahead to the forecast for Sunday, and it said that it is supposed to be 40 and sunny, which for me is the best weather to run in! So, cross your fingers for me!

I'm going to be doing some updating of my music for my runs as I have gotten tired of the summer hits from 2010 :D. I will look around and see what I have on my computer and maybe bye some new music. I am open to suggestions. From what everyone keeps telling me, I wish it were easier for people to post comments on here. My favorite song to run to is Dog Days are Over by Florence and the Machine. It has a really good beat and keeps me energized, although when it came on my during my 12 mile the other day, I got a little too excited and upped my pace too much and got a little tired from it, so I have to be conscious of that when that song comes on.

I have been trying to get into using this app Dailymile. It basically helps you connect with other people running/ working out, but also lets you log your mileage and it compiles info for you. I am also trying to follow other people’s blog to get inspiration from them. So are, ehh haha. At least I am trying. Gotta do what I gotta do, right!

Until the next run,
cody!

Did I really just do that?!?!

PHEW!!!!

I am happy to report that I am still alive. Today I ran a whopping... 12 Miles!!!! Let me tell you, today I am proud of myself!

I stayed out last night after my show to hang out with the cast, and we had Mexican food. I refrained from having a drink, because I knew that I had to run today. I was out till around 1. I slept in this morning and got my butt out of bed around 10. I finally got food in my belly and got myself together and out the door around 11:30. I wanted to stop at the store and pick up an energy bar, and while I was there, I picked up a heating pad for my back, just incase. Any who, I got to the forest preserve ready to run. It was raining out, so I figured if it were too bad, I would just save the run for tomorrow.

I deemed it ok to run in the rain, as it wasn't raining very hard (and let me tell you, that rain of course messed up my hair!). I had a plan in my mind. The trail is 3.6 miles long. So, I knew that I needed to run the trail 3 times and then figure the rest of the mileage out, on the 3rd lap.

I began running, and the rain wasn't bad at all. The weather wasn't too cold and the air seemed crisp. As I came up to my first 3.6 miles, I was feeling good. My stomach was holding up, my body felt physically fine and my mind was clear. I figured I would start taking bites from the energy bar during the remainder of the run, so that I could keep up the good vibes.

So, long story short, I finished the 2nd lap, and still was feeling really good. The only pain that I encountered during the run was sometimes in my right heel and my ankles felt a little sore periodically, but nothing worth complaining about. On to my 3rd lap.

The good thing about running on a trail, in the forest preserve is that there are also other people who use the trail and so you can see them and wave and smile. It is nice to see other exercising too. As I was approaching mile 3 of the 3rd lap, I decided to take my phone out to see what my mileage looked like and much to my surprise, my math was off and I had already run 11.90 miles. I was soooo happy. I picked up my pace a little and finished at 12.11 miles. The following are my stats:

Miles: 12.11 miles
Time: 1:36.07
Pace: 7:59 mins/mile
Calories Burned: 1782

I was soo happy to see my timing. For those of you who are following along, my goal was to finish all my runs with a pace within 8:00 min. This run was above that!!!!!  And the best thing is that I could have seen myself continuing to run on!

When I stopped running, my body hit TENSE UP MODE! I really felt the 12 miles in my legs and feet but in a good way. I finally made it to the car and did a lot of stretching. I know that it very important and I want to make sure I stay comfortable and healthy. I am feeling really good about where I am in my running right now, and if I keep this up, I am looking at a 3-hour marathon!!!! Lets not have me get ahead of myself though!

Until the next run,
cody!

Wonderful Wednesday

Today was absolutely beautiful out! The sun was shining, the air was crisp, and best of all, I felt great!

Today I ran 6 miles. I have been running this same route for the past few weeks, because I know the distance of the trail and it makes it easier for me. However, I know it is important to not get complacent in my runs. So, today I mixed it up. As I have said before, I use the MapMyRun app on my phone, so I can periodically check to see how far I have run.

I was able to run 6 miles in 52:37 mins, which is an 8:42 min/mile. I was really happy with that. And, like I said before, I felt really good. I wish the weather would stay like this forever. It was so nice out. I didn't wear too many layers, so I wasn't too hot or too cold. Towards the end, I really picked up my pace to challenge myself, but I don’t think I will be able to do that on Saturday when I run 12 miles. I might be on empty by the end of that run.

I have looked a little into what I should be eating before my runs, because this past week, I was getting cramps and not feeling so hot in the middle of my running. I found that eating bagels with peanut butter and drinking a glass of orange juice is good, so I tried it and it has been pretty good so far. On Saturday, I think I am going to bring an energy bar along with me, just as a supplement in case.

Tomorrow is a 3 mile run, so it should be easy :D

Here is a picture that I was able to snap of myself in action!!

Until the next run,
cody!

Too-Windy Tuesday

So today, I woke up and decided that it was indeed too windy to run outside. I know that I am trying to maintain consistency, but I also don't want to get swept away and lost foreverrrrrr!

Today started off as usual with my 3 miles. Obviously I ran on the treadmill. My goal for when I am running is to have a pace within 8 minutes. I know for longer runs, it is more difficult, but if I don't have a goal, then I think I would always keep a slower pace. So, anywho, I ran at 7 mph which is a 8:34 min per mile pace. One reason I hate running inside at LA Fitness is because it feels like they keep the heat on in that place, so when I am done, I am literally drenched in sweat. Which actually makes me feel like I am having a better workout, but I guess there really is no pleasing me.

Tomorrow is 6 miles. I hope to get up early and knock it out of the park :D I think I am going to work out after. Oh, update. Running is good for several things 1. the obvious physical aspect 2. the obvious health aspect but one of the best is 3. the mental aspect. Running has really allowed me to meditate to myself, clear my head and allow me to think. In doing so, I have clarified what my length descriptions are. ANything over 7 miles I am deeming as a "long run" and anything under is a "short run". I can finish 7 miles in about an hour, so this week is a "short run" week until Saturday... 12 MILES!!! Im totally ready for it too!

Thanks again to all who have been reading this. I am glad to be sharing my experiences with you, shout out to Michelle!! Now, get off the computer and go run!!!

Until the next run,
cody!

running update

Ok, so sorry for the delay on the post. Like running, blogging is something I am still new with and trying to get comfortable with.

Anywho... here is a recap of the past weekend and up to now.

On Saturday I had my 10 mile run. I was both excited about the challenge but nervous about the outcome. I started my run and was feeling pretty good. I got to about the 2.3o mile mark and I stared to not feel so hot. I had eaten some food to fill my stomach earlier in the morning, but this was a feeling like I had no energy. I was not too happy seeing as how I had basically just started my run. I made it to about 2.80 miles when I started on my second trail, and decided the best thing to do was walk it off. I was hoping that this would help, I could collect my thoughts and move on. Of course I didn't have any protein bar of anything of substance. The brief thought of if I really did need to eat somethings was... GRASS... haha I know, ridiculous!! Good news, it did NOT come to that. I decided to challenge myself again, and at mile 3, I tried to run again. This time I felt good. I guess I needed that little break to collect myself and get back on track. I was still pretty angry with myself about having to walk. During this time, I realized how much of a mental sport this is. I started to think positively and it actually worked. I had someone behind me running and he was gaining on me. I told myself that it is ok if he passes me, and that helped me keep a good pace. He didn't pass me :D

So, it was reallly windy on Saturday, so I had that to deal with. It is really only bad when there are no trees and you are just running on a path. But that is when I really dig deep and try to keep my solid pace, because when I get to an area of no wind, it is that much easier.

Towards the end of my run, I was feeling pretty good, endurance wise. My legs however, were really tight and I knew that I was pushing them to their limit. I have started to incorporate leg squats with weights into my normal work out to try and help build that muscle. Also, my toes were killing me. It wasn't until after my run, and when I was taking my shoes off that I noticed I actually had blisters on my big toes. EEK! I figured it was from not only my shoes, but the distance my feet weren't used to and the way that I run. I am going to look into specialty shoes eventually and maybe that will help.

My stats for the run are as follows : 10miles, 1:31:02 hours, 1375 calories burnt, 9:05 mins/mile. I have to say that with all the setbacks I encountered, I am really pleased with myself. That is the longest and furthest I have ever run! GO ME!

This week has been my normal short runs. 3-5 miles. I am really working hard to get better timing when I run these distances. Today I ran 5 miles in about 40 minutes. I am trying to increase my minutes per mile so that my long runs I can run slower and longer. I am feeling good about my training, and doing my best to stay positive. Tomorrow is 3 miles and Saturday is 7.

Until the next run,
cody!

Week 5

So, today started week 5 of my training. I want to start by thanking those of you who are following my blog, and shout-out to my cousin Stephanie for following me :D!!!!

Today was a 3 mile run. I have been looking into doing some 5k's in the next few weeks to get me into racing mode and change up the monotony of training. Today I tried to train like I was running a 5 k. I did 3.19 miles in about 26 minutes. It isn't the best, but it is fine. I think if you add the added challenge of racing, adrenaline would kick in a I could have a  fast time.

The rest of my week looks as follows: 3 (today), 5, 3, rest, 10, cross. Should be a pretty good week. Seeing as how I am basically unemployed and now have nowhere to be in the morning, I can sleep in a little bit more and so running outside would be a little easier if it is warmer out. Besides the wind, and the actual fact of keeping a good pace, one of the hardest things to do when I run outside is to not stop and pet/ play with all the dogs I see being walked. There was a big, but very cute dog today that I waved to. It was hard to run past him. :D But it is ok, because I have Okie to come home to. Well, that's it.

Until the next run,
cody!

i can do it... I CAN DO IT!!!

Well, Winter is here, and man is it letting us know. This week I ran both inside and out. I found out this week that I do prefer to run outside. I ran 4 miles on the treadmill inside LA Fitness, and felt like I was going to die. It was soooo hot in there. The nice thing about running outside is that, yes. It is cold at first and you want to turn around and go back to your warmth, but once you get running and have your layers on, it is enjoyable. And the eventual sweat keeps you cooled as you run in the crisp wind.

On Thursday though, I ran outside, in 32* weather, and felt as if I were going to die. It was sooo cold. Somehow, I got past that and did my 3 miles. I didn't map it, so I'm not sure if the cold made me run faster or slower.

Today was my long run day.... 9 miles!! I am soo proud of myself for being able to run that far. It is now the farthest/ longest I have ever run. I ran it in 1:23:45. Is was under my intended time of 1:30:00, so that's great! I wasn't sure where I was going to run, but I had an idea. I did my usual path for my short runs, but then I kept going until it lead me to a path in some forest preserve.

http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/57592140

This link has all the information you care to know about, like elevation, pace, my path ect.

I am really starting to feel good about my training. I can honestly say that during my run today, I didn't feel tired. And no, I'm not trying to sound more mighty than I am. I honestly felt really good. I think my legs were getting really heavy, but endurance wise, I was solid. I think though, that I really need to get new shoes. Maybe specialty shoes that are made for long distance running. I love my shoes, but they are wearing out, and just nike running shoes. I'm going to start looking. Any ideas, I would gladly take.

As usual, tomorrow is my cross training day, and I think I am going to give swimming another try. If I don't like it again, I will figure out other ways to cross train. Thanks for reading.

Until the next run,
cody!

Up To Date:

Here's a recap of the past few days. As you know, I have started running outside. On Saturday, I ran my 5 miles which it was a beautiful morning for a run. My under armor is great! Keeps my warm, but doesn't feel like I have 100 layers on. Sunday was my cross training day, so I did my usual walking and biking. I really thought that I would get more into swimming, but I haven't. Monday was my off day. I went to the city with a friend, shout out to Jerica Exum, and auditioned for The Glee Project. It was a fun day as we both got through to the second round of auditions.

Today brought on another 3 mile run. I am happy to say that 3 miles is really becoming "easy". I had my first weather challenge of my training today as it started to rain in the middle of my run. I must say, it was awesome, a little cold, but nonetheless it gave me some adrenaline. I ran 3.19 miles in 26 minutes. I think that's pretty good :D I still have a long ways to go.

This week I have 3, 4, 3, rest, and then 9 miles on Saturday. That will be interesting, but I'm looking forward to it! I'll keep you posted.

Until the next run,
cody!

Week 3

So, it has been a few days since I've last updated this blog. Not too much has happened. I will admit I had a slight drawback this week. I went out on Monday night (Halloween) and didn't get in until late in the morning. Consequently, I was very tired when I woke up and decided that for me to function that day, I should sleep in. So, I did. In doing this, it threw off my training cycle.

Being that I am determined to keep this training up, I altered my schedule. On Wednesday, I ran my intended 3 miles from Tuesday, on Thursday I ran my intended 4 miles from Wednesday and today, Friday I ran my intended 3 miles from Thursday. If you followed that, good for you! Friday's are supposed to be my off days, but I wanted to make sure that I am keeping up with the proper milage to be run over the course of this training, and I figured that I only have 5 miles to run tomorrow, so I should be in good shape in the morning.

I was planning on running outside all week, but that of course didn't happen, except for today. I was able to wear my pants and I wore two shirts and my under-armor pullover. I felt warm except for my hands, which felt like they were going to break off because they were so cold. Now  I know that I NEED to wear gloves.

The run itself felt pretty good. I finished in a faster time than I do on the treadmill, but that's because I am not very good at keeping a steady pace yet. It wasn't until a little over halfway that I started getting a cramp in my side. I tried to do breathing techniques to try and have it go away. It didn't totally worked, but I think it did something. I use Map My Run on my phone to measure how far I go. Here is the link with my stats:

http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/56714986

Tomorrow I am going to try and run again outside. Like I said, it is a 5 mile run, so I should be able to do that with relative ease... We shall see...

Until the next run,
cody!

Halloween Weekend

Happy Halloween weekend to you!
Friday was my rest day and let me tell you, those have become by favorite day of the week! I get to sleep in just a little bit more than usual :D I went to a friends party, shout out to Dolly Livingston, and had a great time, with Jillian Lee!

Jillian as a Boxer or (Miss Capt. America) and Me as a "Hipster"

I didn’t get home and in bed until 4:30am on Saturday, so I decided to change my workout a little. Instead of doing my long run, I did my “Sunday Cross Training”. I walked for 30 minutes at 4 and 4.5 mph and then went on the bike for about 15 minutes. I did my other usual workout and called it a day.

I was able to get to bed a decent hour last night, so today I did my long run, 7 MILES! Let me tell you, I DID IT! I ran at my usual 6 mph speed and finish obviously in 70:00 minutes. That is the longest I have ever run. I am really proud of myself and I didn’t get tired until about mile 5 and just pushed through. It is encouraging knowing that I am able to keep and endurance for this long. It is something that I never thought I would be able to do.

I posted a question on Yahoo to see if I could get some music suggestions for while I run and got some help. I am going to put some things together while I am at work this week and hopefully have a good playlist.

The week ahead looks relatively easy. I have 3,4,3 and 5-mile runs. I am going to try and run outside this week also, weather permitting. I want to use my new running pants and see if they work. I think I have appropriate tops for running so that isn’t a problem. I am still looking for a marathon to run but have not found any in the area. I don’t think I am going to be able to find one, but that fine. I found a half marathon in January in Chicago that I am going to sign up for. It will throw off my training a little, but I’m not really worried about that right now. So, yea… Good things are happening…

Until the next run,
cody!

Wednesday

Today was another 3 mile run day. Nothing exciting or out of the ordinary happened today. I felt good running. The only notable thing that I have done is recently started listening to my own music.

When I was in college, I used to listen to my ipod and just work out. A friend, who I cannot remember, told me that they don't listen to music and just work out. I tried it and liked it. So, for the past two or so years, I haven't listened to music when I ran or worked out. At LA Fitness, my current gym, they play music, but it is low and whatever they have on the radio at the time. So, a few days ago, I went to Sports Authority and bought a pair. Nothing fancy. So, long story long, I started to use them and I am finding it to be good because it is something to distract me from being bored, tired and less energized. My problem is... I don't have good music. So, to the 2 people reading this... any good suggestions for music while running?

I am going to look around and post a question on Yahoo Questions and hope to get a good response. We shall see...

Tomorrow is the same thing... 3 miles. I am thinking about moving my runs outside next week...

Until the next run...

Tuesday

Today started the second week of my Mission: Marathon. Since I've last posted, I have been keeping up rather well. On Sunday, I had my Cross Training day. I took a 20 minute walk, when spent 20 minutes on the bike and then about 20 minutes in the pool. It was the first time in a long time that I had been in a pool, and let me just say that I have the most respect for swimmers. Everyone can call themselves a good swimmer, but when you actually get in a pool for stickily swimming laps, it is another story. What a cardio workout that is!

Anyways, Monday was my off day and let me say.. it is a good thing because I had lots of, maybe too much, fun on Sunday night.

Today started the week off with a three mile run. I ran it at a 10:00 minute pace as I did last week. I think one more week of this pace and I am going to try and up my speed for the short distance runs. I was able to finish the three miles feeling good and energized. I had a really good rest of my work out and hope that this continues for the coming days.

Tonight I am going to watch some high school volleyball. I am looking forward to it seeing as how I love volleyball to the core. I'm going to support a friends daughter, so GO SANDBURG!

Until the next run,
cody!

Day 5

Yesterday was my day of rest, and let me tell you, it felt really good. I was able to sleep in and when I woke up, my body felt recharged and fresh.

Today was the day I was looking the least forward to this week. It was the dreaded 6 mile run. I know that 6 miles is only the beginning of what is ahead for me, but I am allowed to over exaggerate. I got to bed at 12:00am, and decided to not go out with my cast mates, with the hopes that that would get me enough sleep. When I woke up at 7:00am, I was a little tired, but ready for the run.

I got to the gym a little later than I was hoping to make it, I wanted to allow myself enough time to shower and get to work on time. I still managed, just not in the timeline I wanted. I started off my run with a good stretching and 5 minute walk at 4mph. I knew that I needed to be as comfortable as possible.

I started my run at 6mph with the intention of slowing down after my 3 mile mark. After one mile, I was feeling really good. Not tired, not sore, just really good and comfortable. However, at mile two, I started to feel really weak. I didn't have anything substantial to eat before my run, so I started to feel feeble and tried. I was going to try for 3 miles, but I figured I shouldn't over do it. I had gotten to the point where I felt like I was sick, my stomach was not happy. So, I stopped running and went and got a banana and an energy bar. I had a couple of bites and it was back to running. Of course when I stopped, I didn't look to see how far into the 2nd mile I was, so I figured if I run 4 miles, I'll be good. And that's what I did. I ran the 4 miles all at the 6mph and it felt great. I felt like I could keep running. I was physically ok, mentally ok and still feeling motivated. I stopped after the last mile because I know it is important to stick to the training manual.

So, all in all, I had a good run today. I think I know what I need to do in order to be successful (eat something substantial before my runs). Tomorrow is a “cross training” (another form of cardio other than running) day, so I think I am going to SWIM :D I’ve not used the clubs pool yet, so that should be interesting. If all else fails and I don’t swim, I will use the bikes and figure out some other cardio work.

Until the next run,
cody!

Day 3

Good news... I'm still alive.

Today was the last 3 mile run of the week. I did fine except for the fact that a part of my leg (right above my calf muscle, but right under my knee) hurt. I felt it the whole run. I made sure to stretch before and after. I suppose it is just my legs not being used to the intense running that I have been doing so far. The good news is that I get to rest tomorrow, so hopefully that will give my body time to rest up.

I spoke to a good friend of my, shout-out to Jackie Venditti, and she was telling me about the half-marathon she is going to be training for. Hers is in Florida in February somewhere around Orlando... I would love to run in Florida in the "winter". I imagine the conditions are great for running. Not too hot, nor too cold.

I should probably start looking into a marathon so that I actually have a marathon to train for, instead of just training to run one. I am supposed to run 6 miles on Saturday, which will be the most I have ever run at one time. I am both nervous that I won’t make it, but also looking forward to the challenge. I normally workout after my run, but I think I will just run and then be done so that I don't over do it to my body. Thanks for reading… if you are :D

Until the next run,
cody!

Day 2

So, today was day number 2 of my many, many, many days of training for the marathon. It was another 3 mile run. I did the same pace as yesterday, but today was a little bit more difficult. My body needs to get used to running for longer than 15 minutes. I could really feel the tension in my legs this morning, which probably means that I need to stretch before I start my runs. Anyways, I was able to pull through and get the 3 miles done. Tomorrow looks like it will be the same routine. I am striving for FRIDAY which is my REST DAY!!

While I was running, I started thinking about how LONG marathons are. With where I am at right now, 30 minutes of running seems like forever, and add 23 more miles... YIKES. I know my pace will vary as I continue to train, but the thought of running for several hours, without stopping, is a little nerve rattling. Can I do it? I think the reason I want to do this so badly is because I want to prove to myself that I do have the discipline to achieve this and that I have the focus that is needed.

I am interested to see how things go this weekend as my show picks up again and I will be out late most likely drinking... I can do it :D

until the next run,
cody!

Day 1

Today was the first day of my Mission: Marathon and I have to say, it went really well. I am following the
Hal Higdon Novice 1 Marathon Training  training guide. It looks pretty intense, but I know if I commit to it, I can do it.

It started the week off with MONDAY REST! Which I was happy for. Today I ran 3 miles. I am forced to do it all inside on a treadmill due to the cold weather. I know that once I get more comfortable running longer distance with a consistent pace, I can try it outside, but for now... Inside it is. I ran with a 10:00 min mile pace which is 6mph. Normally I would run at a 7mph pace, but I figured that would be way to ambitious, and I am glad I made that decision :D.

Along with my new running routine, I am trying to eat healthier. Being that I am a vegetarian, I already eat fairly healthily, but I am going to cut back on sweets, take in more water, and look for a good multivitamin. If you know of any, suggestions are welcome.

As I look ahead to the rest of the week, it looks doable... until Saturday... That is certainly going to be a challenge, 6 miles, but I am ready for it!

Until the next run,
cody!

My History

So here marks the beginning of my journey. I have an 18 week training guide that I plan on following each day, each week. Before I get started in my running, here is a brief history of my running experience:

When I moved to Park Forest, I was entering the 7th grade. I had never really played any sports, and being that I was the new kid; my mom thought it would be a good way for me to make friends if I joined the cross country team. It couldn't be that hard, I thought. I was a kid, had lots of energy, and the running couldn't be that far! Well, let me tell you that it was definitely a struggle. Go figure that I was always the last one done with practice each day, as I would come running up to the building a good while after everyone else. However, I thought that I would give it a chance and decide if I wanted to keep doing it after the first meet.

So, naturally the first meet came around much quicker than I anticipated it. I'm on the starting line and "GO"! I'm running, and at this point feeling pretty good about myself. I'm passing people, not getting tired and really believing that I could do it. When all of the sudden... I need air. I'm totally winded and realizing that I started the race WAY to fast and now I have nothing left. So I walk for a little bit. No one was around to see me. Then, they all came running behind, nope, now alongside, nope now in front of me... at this point, I could see the last stretch of grass, probably 100 yards away. I hear footsteps behind me and who is it? None other than 3 girls that I had passed before. They ran past me and then stopped. They decided that they were going to walk with me to the finish line. I of course was humiliated and eventually finished the race. Needless to say, that was the end of my cross country career.

In college, about my jr/sr year, when I realized that I had gained about 25 pounds, I decided that I needed to do something about it. I would go to the gym and pound out a mile a day, sometimes two. Eventually I got the point where running 3 miles was about it. But I was comfortable with that. While in Oklahoma, I had the opportunity to run a 5k with a friend and that was fun and rewarding. Since then, I have incorporated running into my daily workouts, whether it is one, two or maybe three miles. I would by no means consider myself a good runner, but it has been something I have overcome and want to make a commitment to making it easier, and more pleasurable.

So, here starts my long embark of Mission: Marathon.
